Maxwell Sims Studio

Maxwell Sims is a Canadian designer exploring how materials, form, and meaning shape the built environment. His work focuses on furniture, and everyday objects. Exhibited internationally, his projects reflect an ongoing interest in how macro and micro decisions coalesce as physical products. His projects have been featured in publications such as Dezeen and Design Milk.

He studied Industrial Design at OCAD University in Toronto, and The Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and his work spans areas such as research and product development.

Billet Bowl

Aluminum + Maple + Rubber O-Ring

A solid round bar of aluminum is typically lathed and shaped into a desirable form. I found the innate solidity of round bar satisfying when I first encountered a large piece of stock in a machine shop.

Billet uses a solid aluminum base which is milled a small amount and inserted as a tenon through the wooden bowl's mortise. A rubber O-ring creates a pressure fit while managing the wood's natural expansion and contraction allowing for a glueless joint. The aluminum is anodized in contrasting colours to emphasize this foreign union — making the connection more legible. The cantilever is enabled by the difference in weight between the two materials and somehow this strange union accomplishes a satisfying expression.
